Step Four: DMV Driving Test

Important

Persons between the ages of 17 1/2 and 18 are not required by the State of California to take or complete both the driver education and/or driver training course in order to take the DMV written test. Yet, these persons are only permitted to take the DMV road exam when they reach the age of 18.

Requirements

California State requires minor students to be 16 years of age when taking the California DMV driving test: Minor students need to be accompanied prior to the DMV road exam by an adult of 25 years of age or older.

DMV Location

Confirm your appointment first. Inside, a DMV representative will help you with all further steps. Show the following "original" documents to your DMV representative:

  • Gold (OL 328) "DMV Certificate of Completion in Driver Training"
  • Provisional Permit
  • Valid car insurance
  • Valid vehicle registration

DMV Driving Test

  • Take your driving test which will take between 10 to 15 minutes. If you fail, you must wait two weeks before you can take the test again. You have three (3) chances to pass. DMV Preparation
  • After you pass your driving test you will be issued an interim license valid for 60 days until you receive your new photo license in the mail. If you have not received your license after 60 days, call 1 (800) 777-0133 to check on the status.
