Step Two: DMV Written Test

Important

Cinneti encourage students to study the latest edition of the California Driver Handbook thoroughly (this on top of the student's required driver education course) before taking the California DMV written exam.

Requirements

  • California State requires minor students to be 15 years and 6 months of age (or older) when taking the California DMV written exam.
  • Persons between the ages of 17 1/2 and 18 are not required by the State of California to take or complete both the driver education and/or driver training course in order to take the DMV written exam. Yet, these persons are only permitted to take the DMV driving exam when they reach the age of 18.

Application Form

Minor students must complete an original DL 44 application1 prior to the DMV written exam; copies of this document will not be accepted at your California DMV location.

  • The application fee for 2007 is $27.00: This fee includes three DMV written exams and three DMV road exams.
  • The application will become invalid if requirements are not met within a 12 month period of passing the written test. A person who does not meet the requirements must re-start the application process from the start: this includes fees and cost of both courses at a state licensed driving school and institution.
  • Persons between the age of 15 1/2 and 18 years of age are required by the State of California to have a signature of one or both parent(s)/guardian(s).
  • Parents do not have to join their minor student. However, the DL 44 form must be signed by one or both of the parents or guardians. (DMV info click here)
